DUNCAN Mugabe upset seventh seed Mohammed Mohazebnia in the second round of the ITF/Futures circuit in Bujumbura, Burundi yesterday. The 17-year-old Uganda who is unseeded, registered a 3-6 6-2 6-2 victory in one of the biggest shocks of the competition.

Mugabe, appearing for the first time in the circuit, is due to meet Lithuanian seed two Gvidas Sabeckis in the third round.
Mugabe will also participate in the Rwanda leg scheduled for September 15-20 and the final leg due in Kampala September 22-27.

At the same time, the International Tennis Federation development officer for East African Prince Madema has made a passionate plea to Uganda Lawn Tennis Association (ULTA) to allocate more time to the youths to use Lugogo courts.

“There is need for the association to have more playing time for their youths on the Lugogo courts,” Madema explained.

“ULTA should be looking for new Mugabes and it would be good for youths to given more time to improve their skills on the courts.”

The official has been pushing for Lugogo to become the East Africa tennis centre.
