He chose love over life

We all pray that no misfortune happens to us - at least not on our wedding day. That special day is the time when most people get to be in the limelight. But for David Kazoora, alias Kazoora Junior, things took a different turn.

The former WBS presenter and current Brand Manager for Mirinda Pineapple, collapsed just after giving his speech at his reception and was whisked off to hospital in an ambulance leaving his wife, Patricia Kukundakwe in shock.

But trouble began earlier during his kasiki (bachelor party) when Kazoora abruptly fell sick and was taken to hospital and found to have appendicitis.

Sources say he was supposed to undergo an operation but he chose to postpone it till after his wedding. That Saturday, he left the hospital bed and was assisted by medical staff to go and say his vows in church.

Thereafter, he dismissed their advice against proceeding to the reception and proceeded to Serena Hotel. He chose love over life and nearly paid dearly for it. But his point rings out clear. When he gave his life to his wife, he meant it. Saturday Vision caught up with him.

How did it all start?
It was on Thursday at the kasiki at the Rouge. On Friday morning I was admitted to the hospital and they told me it was appendicitis. I was on drip all day, but by Saturday morning I was fine.

Surprisingly, at 2:30pm I was unable to walk; they had to give me injections so that I could go to say my vows. I did not eat anything at my own wedding - not even a soda or a piece of cake! I will have to organise another reception for close friends and relatives. My honeymoon was in Paragon Hospital, but luckily enough, I had planned it in December. I will be better.

Have you healed yet?
Not 100% but I will be alright soon. I did not rest enough. I had to rush back to work because I had not got leave for my wedding.

Do you realise you could have died?
Last year, I was involved in a terrible accident and I came out without even a scratch. I learnt that you die if it is your day.

So at my wedding I had this strong belief that it was not yet my day; I was very strong. My operation was scheduled for Friday but I pushed it to Saturday after giving my speech at the reception. I had to sign a document showing that I was responsible for whatever could happen. I had to do it for Patricia.

Yet you could have postponed the wedding!
The wedding was not just about Kazoora and Patricia; it was about the family. I had to be strong.

Some people say it was a showbiz stunt.
(Laughs). I am not in showbiz anymore. Surely, who wouldn’t like to celebrate his or her wedding day? You cannot feign sickness because of showbiz. I would have loved to have a fantastic wedding, dancing myself lame, but God had His plans.

How did Patricia react when you collapsed?
The funny thing is when I learnt that I was sick, I hid it from her. It was not all that bad because I could walk and talk freely.

But I did not collapse; what happened was that after my speech I did not sit down. I was led to an ambulance, which took me directly to the theatre. When I woke up four hours later I saw many people around me, but my wife was not there.

She was still at the party; she came later but she was so tired she slept besides my bed. She left towards morning to sleep in Serena.

Are you disappointed?
No regrets; everyone was happy and kept on praying for me, but I also gave an impression that the problem had a solution.

Otherwise, the party went on as it was planned. And there are so many lessons. The gratifying one is that you can always count on friends and family members. They will always be there for you.
