THE Uganda Taxi Operators and Drivers’ Association (UTODA) has warned rival organisation, Commercial Taxi Operators and Drivers’ Association (COTODA), against disrupting taxi operations as schools open today.
In a press statement, UTODA’s executive secretary, the Rev. Ferdinard Atwiine Ibabaza, assured the public that there will be normal taxi operations today despite threats by COTODA to damage taxis transporting passengers
He called upon taxi drivers to perform their duties normally. He warned that those who will try to disrupt taxis would be arrested and handed over to the Police.
Nsubuga Mutagayika, the UTODA claims officer, said they had alerted the Police about COTODA’s strike, which he said had been announced on various radio stations and on posters in Kampala.
The wrangle pitting UTODA against COTODA is about taxi loading fees, commonly referred to as ‘welfare’. The welfare fees range between sh15,000 to sh35,000 per loading.
Several interventions from the Ministry of Local Government, Kampala City Council and the office of the president have failed to end the wrangle.
The strike was planned to paralyse the beginning of the school term today as taxis are the major means of transport for students.
