SOFTWARE stakeholders have staged the first BarCamp aimed at popularising the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. A BarCamp is an adhoc gathering aimed at sharing and learning from an open environment.
The BarCamp was held at Makerere University’s Faculty of Technology on September 12 where discussions, demonstrations and interactions took place.
Helen Karamagi, the pioneer of the BarCamp, said the Kampala ICT Software Cluster, which helps stakeholders regulate and develop the industry, had spearheaded the event.
“There were presentations about using Web 2.0 applications to boost rural communities, enhancing the use of ICTs among women to share information and address issues collectively by the Women of Uganda Network,†she said.
“The cluster unites stakeholders to share resources, come up with capacity building programmes and share contracts,†John Musajjakawa, an investment officer with the Uganda Investment Authority, noted, adding: “This will create customer satisfaction and lead to innovation and growth.â€
Steven Ntambi of the Faculty of Technology showcased Vehicle Design Summit technology, which is used to manufacture a car that runs on hydrogen. The research is done in collaboration with other international universities.
Elite Technologies and Crystal Clear Software displayed the latest technologies for community information systems and micro-finance software respectively.
