THE Police are putting in place a number of security measures to check violence in the city.

The Police yesterday said the measures include compulsory registration of all boda boda cyclists in the city and snap searches of the cyclists at night. This is because most of the recent gun-related crimes in the city involved the use of boda boda.

Kampala Police spokesperson Simeo Nsubuga said the Regional Police Commander had sent out a communication to divisional Police commanders in the city to begin registering all boda boda cyclists.

Nsubuga said three shooting incidents have recently happened in the city, all of which were executed by people riding on boda boda. “They can easily conceal guns under their jackets. This is why our officers on patrol will start carrying out impromptu searches of cyclists at night.”

The Police also plan to set up Mobile Police Patrol Unit detachments on the Northern By-pass to curb thuggery. The Police said the road was dotted with several crime spots.

“There are several dark spots on the road where people have fallen victim to thugs,” said Nsubuga.

He said the decision to erect detachments followed an inspection of the road by the Police over the weekend.

Nsubuga said the Police were also stepping up their operations in the city and its suburbs to counter a new wave of crime in which thugs waylay their victims and hit them with iron bars before robbing them.

Nsubuga said the Police had arrested a man suspected of being the chief architect behind the new wave of crime. The suspect is detained at the headquarters of the Rapid Response Unit in Kireka. However, the Police declined to reveal his identity. Nsubuga added that three other suspects were also arrested.
