Fashion Nite was not all that...

Last Thursday night proved that Uganda’s fashion industry still has a long way to go. The highlight of the fourth Fashion Nite at Club Silk was a bunch of burly bodybuilders who were part of the entertainment for the night.

After power-house designers Sylvia Owori and Arapapa’s previous showcases at the Fashion Nite which takes place every second Thursday of the month, Ethiopian Fenote’s Queen of Sheba fashion paled in comparison.

The turn up was low and, perhaps hoping for more people to come, the show was delayed until 9.00pm, an hour later than stated.

Fenote is a petite Ethiopian designer based in Muyenga, Kampala. Her fashion signature is the woven traditional Ethiopian fabric with shiny threads which give the fabric an elegant look.

She combined these with contemporary universal fabrics like denim and satin to make her designs relevant. But whether it was the models or the clothes, something was seriously amiss.

The seasonal casual collection was the first on the catwalk, followed by the bridal collection, then office wear and the party collection last. The bridal collection was interesting and she had some quality pieces but over all the collections lacked consistency and unique value.

There was hardly anything that wowed the guests. The multi-sized models looked like novices and lacked coordination, one of them was so bad that every time she hit the catwalk, the audience burst out in fits of laughter. By 10.00pm the show had come to a close.

Other entertainment came in the form of new music act Jamal and the Dream Galz who dazzled.
