SOUTH Africa took the gloss off Uganda’s qualification to the 2009 Women’s Rugby Sevens World Cup with a 24-0 spanking of the home side at Kyadondo Rugby Club yesterday.
With both finalists already booking slots in the World Cup in Dubai, the tactically superior South Africans showed no mercy to their hosts, scoring four tries before the home crowd.
Natasha Hofmeester scored two tries while Nachin Banadi and Yolanda Mering added one apiece to give the swift South Africans a deserved win.
South African captain Saloma Booysen was impressed by the high level of competition.
“It feels great qualifying for the World Cup. We won all our games but I can’t say it was an easy tournament. Zambia and other countries also played well.
"We have been preparing for this tournament for one year and it’s nice winning it,†Saloma said in a post-match interview.
To make the final, the champions beat Kenya 26-5 while Uganda upstaged Tunisia 7-0 to spark off wild celebrations.
Meanwhile, MTN Heathens triumphed over uganda telecom Kobs to win the Kyadondo Sevens at the same venue yesterday.
Two tries by the tournament MVP Alex Mubiru and a try each by Brian Tabaruka and Michael Wokorach sunk Kobs as the Heathens avenged their defeat to Kobs in the Jinja Sevens a week ago.
Heathens lead the utl 7s circuit with 56 points, eight clear of Kobs.
The four-leg circuit winds up this weekend with the Kitaka Memorial Sevens at Kampala Club.
