Dear Doctor,
The area around my anus itches especially when I sweat yet there is no swelling. I feel embarrassed in public. What could be the problem?

Dear Aaron,
ITCHING of the anus is a fairly common, though embarrassing problem.
The most well-known cause is an intestinal worm called the ‘Whip Worm’.

They come out to lay eggs, and make the anus itch. When you scratch, you take the eggs on your hands, thus spreading the worms.

They can be healed with ‘de-worming’ treatment. But there are many other causes;
Wetness at the anus (sweat, discharges)

Wounds
Hemorrhoids (varicose veins at the anus)
Skin (fungal) infections
Allergic reaction e.g. to the dye in toilet paper
Some foods, especially highly spiced ones

In your case, wetness due to sweat is the cause. Avoid tight, underwear which would cause you to sweat.
Use absorbent cotton and change frequently.

Dry yourself well after a bath. Use non-scented, white toilet paper. Avoid any foods that you may associate with itching.

If these measures don’t help, consult a doctor for an examination. The doctor can give you an anti-itch cream.
