NINE people died and 15 others sustained serious injuries in two separate accidents on the Kampala-Masaka highway and on Gayaza Road in Wakiso district.

The Mpigi district traffic Police chief, Robert Mugudde, said on Friday at about 10:30pm a truck carrying matooke and heading toward Kampala at Kawule in Mpigi district hit the back of an min-bus, whose driver lost control.

“The min-bus swung from its lane and collided head-on with a bus that was moving in the opposite direction,” he said on phone.

One person died on the spot and two died on the way to Mulago Hospital.

The other, a juvenile, died in hospital.

The dead included James Kabuye, the driver of the min-bus, and Albert Sserwada.

Mugudde said investigations into the cause of accident were still going on. At Kasangati on Gayaza Road, five people died on the spot when the driver of a saloon car lost control and the vehicle hit a tree.

The Police said the driver hit a pothole that sent the vehicle off the road. The dead were identified as Ivan Ssemakula, who is said to have just returned from Iraq, George Luwaga, Ismail Mulemba, Kenny and Kadingo, all residents of Gayaza.

The wreckage was towed to Kiira Road Police Station.
