STATE minister for agriculture Dr. Israel Kibirige Ssebunya is in a serious condition at his home in Kagoma in Wakiso.

Ssebunya, previously admitted at different hospitals in South Africa and Germany, was returned home about one month ago.

The minister, who is the MP for Kyaddondo North in Wakiso district, is suffering tongue cancer.

A member of Ssebunya’s family said a doctor goes to his home everyday to administer some undisclosed treatment.
The New Vision team that went to his home yesterday were unable to see him to establish his condition.

“He has just got medication. He is asleep,” his sister identified as Nakakande said.

The family maintained that the minister’s condition was stable and he could recognise faces. Other reports said Ssebunya could not talk but communicates through signs.

Ssebunya was transferred to Germany from South Africa in July when his condition worsened. He had been admitted in South Africa for over a month.

Tongue cancer affects the mouth and the throat. The main cause is smoking in addition to heavy drinking. Described as humourous and amiable, Ssebunya holds a PhD in plant breeding and cytogenetics. He has been a minister since 1999.
