Why are my nails peeling?

WHAT you describe sounds like a fungal infection of the nails. The infections are usually painless, with slow discoloration of the nail, which may flake or peel off. New nail growth is irregular.

Dear Doctor,
I am 22. My toe nails started darkening recently becoming a dead tissue. New layers form under them. The toes are not painful but have a funny colour, and the nails eventually peel off. The new nails that are growing have an irregular shape. What is causing this? What should I do?
Ismael

Dear Ismael,
WHAT you describe sounds like a fungal infection of the nails. The infections are usually painless, with slow discoloration of the nail, which may flake or peel off. New nail growth is irregular.

Usually the diagnosis is easily made by a doctor. If it is not easy to make, part of the nail can be taken for laboratory analysis.

You have to take treatment for about six months to treat the fungal nail infection.
There are other possible causes of what you describe, including injury to the toes.

First see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and then start on the treatment. Consult a dermatologist (skin specialist) if you doubt the diagnosis.
