Parents have been cautioned against charging exorbitant bride price.

The retired Bishop of Masaka Diocese, Adrian Kivumbi Ddungu, said this was detrimental to the sacrament of matrimony.

“The current trend is that the groom-to-be takes expensive items like a vehicle, furniture and cows in addition to large sums of money to the brides’ parents. This has made many youth to shun holy matrimony and opt for cohabiting,” Ddungu said.

He was speaking at Lubaga Cathedral on Sunday during a function where 250 couples celebrated after spending more than 30 years in marriage.

Ddungu also urged parents to desist from wanting to benefit from their daughters.

He also decried the rampant break-up of marriages, which he attributed to lack of trust among married people.

“Some couples even separate within the first year of marriage. The rampant breaking up of marriages has lead to the suffering of many children and a situation where many of them grow up with single parents. Since it is difficult for a single parent to bring up a child, such children grow up without good morals. I urge parents to respect holy matrimony and keep the family together,” Ddungu said.

He also urged married couples to be faithful to each other and protect themselves against HIV.

“Unfortunately, research shows that HIV/AIDS is increasing among the married couples, some of whom are discordant. Don’t risk, please take care,” he said.

Lubaga Cathedral parish priest the Rev. Fr. Archilles Mayanja said the diocese had invested sh20m in promoting marriages and organising wedding parties for couples who wish to get married.

“Lubaga parish has funded many couples who did not have money to organise weddings,” Mayanja said.
