STATE minister for disaster preparedness Musa Ecweru has described the defilement allegations as “trumped-up”, orchestrated by his opponents to bring him down politically and to “injure” his family and reputation.

“The media reports that Musa Ecweru defiled a girl he once housed caused a lot of shock. It is calculated by the authors not to seek justice but to damage my reputation and torture my family. I have to make it categorically clear that this is the hoax of the year,” the minister said at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s office yesterday.

“I am a very injured person and no amount can repay the injury on me. I should be the last person to be a victim of these kinds of machinations,” he added.

Ecweru, who is also the Amuria MP, said he had not yet received the summons which had been distributed to the media houses on Friday.

Asked whether he would honour the summons, he said: “I am a national leader who should serve as a role model and answer for all my actions. I am ready to battle it out. I pray that the courts decisively handle the matter to its logical conclusion, expose the authors and redress the injured.”

According to the summons, issued by Buganda Road Court chief magistrate Margaret Tibulya, Ecweru is accused of defiling a 17-year-old girl. He is required to appear in court on October 3 to answer two charges of defilement and indecent assault.

The charge sheet stated that in September 2007, at his home in Namuwongo, Ecweru had sexual intercourse with Joan Idu and made her pregnant. The complainant, according to the court documents, was the girl’s father, Steven Okiror, who is married to a cousin of Ecweru’s late wife.

But at the press conference, Ecweru denied a girl with that name stayed at his home in Namuwongo. The only Idu he knows, he said, is Idu Aleto Annete, who stayed with his family from 2002 to 2004 before she was sent away.

He paraded Idu, along with a man he identified as her husband, Joseph Odelle, and her father, John Kokas Oba. Also present was the father to Ecweru’s late wife, identified as Okanya.

All of them denied having lodged a complaint or knowing anything about the case. John Kokas Oba said he only came to know about the issue when Ecweru contacted him in the village.

“We have not gone to court”, Oba told the press. “My daughter is happily married to Joseph Odelle and they are peasants, living in the village.”

The father of the minister’s late wife said: “I am not aware of this case and we have not gone to court.”

Ecweru said his political opponents had mixed things up. “They got someone close to my family who could not give them all the information and that is why they came up with different names. I don’t have any relative called Steven Okiror.”

Idu, who was breastfeeding her baby, said through an interpreter that she worked as a maid at Ecweru’s residence in Namugongo before she went to study at Trinity College Nabbingo and later Ngora Integrated Academy.

“I was in S3 at Ngora and dropped out in 2004 due to pregnancy. I have two children with Odelle who are both girls. I don’t know anything to do with Ecweru,” she said. Odelle confirmed that Idu is his wife and that they have two children.

Pressed to confirm if he was ready to go for a DNA test to prove his innocence, Ecweru replied: “Which DNA test? Where is the child?”

The minister explained that this was not the first time his name was being soiled by his opponents.

“Remember when I had just become a minister, I was accused of murder. My opponents have tried to damage my name but they always forget to clean their tray.”

He added that he knew the people behind the accusations but his lawyers had advised him not to mention their names.
