THE Danish Crown Princess, Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, has expressed happiness that the internally displaced people in northern Uganda are leaving the camps to return to their villages.

She encouraged them to work hard to rebuild their lives despite the poverty they were living in.

Princess Mary on Wednesday visited Ongako and Te-Tugu IDP camps in Gulu district.

“Although poverty still exists, I am happy people are returning back to their homes,” She said.

The Crown Princess was welcomed with a heavy down-pour at Ongako IDP camp, something which the local community described as a blessing.

Princess Mary, who is also the patron of the Danish Refugee Council, visited Danis-funded projects such as the rehabilitation of access roads to ease movements of IDPs back to their homes.

She commissioned three bicycle ambulances that the council donated to Lapainat Health Centre at Oilango village in Koro sub-county.

She visited Odongo Ogwal, one of the IDPs.

Odong told her that he was looking after 15 orphans of his late brothers.

“How long have you been here and what are the challenges that you face. Do you have enough water? Are all the 15 members of the family living in this one hut? Are the children in school?” she asked Odong.

Odong said the biggest problem was lack of food because what they had planted would take sometime to mature for harvest. He requested for farm tools.
