IN 1996, a budding dancehall singer from the ghettos of Kamwokya started recording his music at Kasiwukira Studios. He recorded songs like Kalyonso, Doreen and Namulembe, but none of them gave him a breakout hit.

Still, nothing was about to daunt his career dreams. This young man never looked back and his persistence in the music game would pay off in later years.

By 2001, Bobi Wine had made a name for himself. In fact, Kagoma, the tune he recorded at Kasiwukira Studios that year would soon make him known across the country.

In the subsequent years, Bobi Wine created music that would win him the most coveted musical title in the land—the Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) Awards Artiste of The Year—in addition to other awards.

His catalogue of hits has been one long diary since he burst onto the scene in 2001. Among other hits, Wine churned out Funtula, Wendi, Maama Wa’baana, Maama Mbiire, Bada, Abalungi Balumya and Kiwani.

This is part of the story that Bobi Wine is sharing with his fans on Mazzi Mawanvu, his latest hit song. Mazzi Mawanvu is also the title track of Wine’s latest album, which the singer will launch tonight at Kati Kati Bar in Lugogo.

The launch concert will feature all Ugandan artistes, radio and television adverts say. Entrance fee is sh20,000. Tomorrow, Bobi Wine heads to Collin Hotel in Mukono before going to Gaba Beach on Sunday.

Both shows are sponsored by MTN. Wine’s latest album, which features songs like Bibuuzo, Bad Man From Kamwokya (featuring Navio), The Little Thing (featuring Kenyan sensation, Wahu) and Singa has earned the artiste four nods in this year’s PAM Awards.

The title track is also in the race for the Song of The Year award. But even as he rides that wave, he does not seem to match the compositional brilliance or sheer punch of his early years in the music game.
