THE first round of the Uganda Ladies Golf Open produced a shocker as pre-tournament dark-horses Hawa Wanyeche of Tanzania and Zambian Mellisa Nawa shot 77 apiece to share the lead.

Wanyache and Nawa, both making a maiden in the Uganda Ladies open sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank took an early lead as pre-event favourites had a woeful opening round despite the mild shinny weather on the par-72 Kitante course.

Nawa, 16, who won the Egyptian Open, is currently a senior four student in Zambia.

Defending champion Mary Karano, seeking a third straight win in the tournament shared third spot with regular campaigner Monica Ntege with 80, three strokes behind the joint leaders.

Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Flavia Namakula who is expected to lead the local challenge got off to a modest start, tying with Tanzanian Angel Eaton on 83, six shots off the pace.

The eighth position was a three-way tie as Ugandans Eva Okatch and Melon Kyomugisha were in a deadlock with Tanzanian Sophia Viggo at 85, setting what is expected to a closely contested second round today.

The 54 holes stroke-play main event of the tournament ends tomorrow
The professionals’ and subsidiary events of the tournament get underway this morning.

The tournament organised by Uganda Ladies Golf Union (ULGU) is sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank to the tune of sh15m.
