A man has appeared before Tororo chief magistrate’s court over defilement and incest. Yoram Okoth, 43 is suspected to have defiled his 10-year-old niece.

The suspect, who is a brother of the girl’s father, appeared before Tororo chief magistrate Pruff Rukatirwa on Friday.

The charges were read and explained to him but he was not allowed to enter plea as the offences could only be tried by the High Court.

The court remanded him to Morukatipe prison, pending committal to high court for trial.

Court heard that the suspect committed the offence at Pokongo Amor Zone in Tororo district on September 11.

Prosecution told court that Okoth had taken the responsibility of looking after the girl two weeks earlier following the death of her brother, who had been taking care of her. Court heard that on the fateful day, the suspect’s wife was away.

Okoth reportedly went for a drinking spree, returned home and attacked the girl from her bed. He used a knife to threaten the girl into submission, the prosecutor said.

Prosecution added that the suspect threatened to kill the victim if she dared to tell anyone what had happened to her.

However, inquisitive neighbours who had seen the girl walking with difficulty, questioned her. They were shocked when she told them that her uncle had forcefully had sex with her, court was told.

The suspect was arrested and handed over to the Police after the neighbours reported the matter to the local authorities.
