THE Vision Group yesterday signed a $9m (sh15b) agreement with Spicers Eastern Africa to purchase a new, ultra-modern printing press, the first of its kind in East Africa.
The machine will enable The New Vision print high quality 64-colour pages in one run and automate the packaging and delivery system.
Chief Executive Officer Robert Kabushenga, company secretary Gervase Ndyanabo and finance manager Zubair Musoke signed on behalf of The Vision Group, while Gordon Weston endorsed for Spicers.
The signing ceremony, witnessed by New Vision Editor-in-Chief Els De Temmerman, production manager Rachel Namuli and chief internal auditor Kabumba Masiko, took place at the company’s head offices in Kampala. “This is an important milestone for The New Vision,†Kabushenga said.
“This investment will enable us to print faster, better and have a full-colour newspaper.â€
He said the super-fast printing press, which can print 40,000 newspapers per hour, will meet the expectations of the advertisers and the readers who want news in time.
Gordon Weston, the managing director of Spicers Eastern Africa, said the machine would be delivered in July 2009. “We are one hundred percent committed to meeting our obligation. Everything will be done according to schedule.â€
The Vision Group recently concluded a successful rights issue where sh29b was raised, over and above the required sh28b.
The funds will finance major expansion plans. Apart from the new printing press, the company will construct a bigger factory and a new office block that will cater for the recent investments in the electronic media.
Two new radio stations have been launched in the last one year - Vision Voice and Bukedde FM – while the company recently acquired Radio West, which covers the western, southern and a large part of the central region.
