FORMER health state minister, Mike Mukula, was yesterday questioned by the anti-corruption crime unit of the Police for three hours over allegations of lying under oath during the Global Fund probe.

The allegations are contained in the report of the commission of inquiry into the misuse of Global Fund money, meant to fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

The commission, headed by Justice James Ogoola, said Mukula lied when he said he went to six districts to monitor Global Fund activities in an attempt to account for the funds.

The commission said it found that Mukula did not actually go to the districts. The districts in question are Kalangala, Rakai, Ssembabule, Kapchorwa, Bugiri and Kumi.
Mukula is accused of misuse of Global Fund money along with his former colleague, Alex Kamugisha, and his then line minister Jim Muhwezi.

Immediately after his interrogation, a beaming Mukula said he was sure there was no case against him and the Police would clear him after the evidence he had brought.

“When all this is out of the way, we demand a strong apology or Justice Ogoola should resign for discrediting my name,” he told the press.

Mukula, the NRM vice-chairman in charge of eastern Uganda, arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department head office at 11:00am together with his wife.

Supported by Rubanda West Member of Parliament, Henry Banyenzaki, he held an impromptu press conference where he said he had brought evidence proving that he went to the six districts.

Mukula, accompanied by his lawyer, Fred Muwema, disclosed that the evidence included a CD-ROM with pictures, audio and visual recordings and signatures of officials who attended the functions.
