THE Police yesterday issued guidelines as the nation celebrates its 46th independence anniversary today at the Kololo ceremonial grounds.

Kampala Police spokesperson Simeo Nsubuga said: “Mobile phones, camera’s walkie–talkies, firearms and hand bags will not be allowed at the venue.”

The theme for the clebrations is: “Working for the common good of Uganda–A necessary requirement for the protection and solidification of our independence.”

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, sent a congratulatory message to the nation.

“It gives me much pleasure to send Your Excellency my congratulations on the celebration of your National Day, together with my best wishes for the happiness and prosperity of the Government and people of Uganda in the coming year,” the message read.

Nsubuga said Upper Kololo Terrace will be closed to the public from 6:00am to the end of the celebrations.

Lower Kololo Terrace, he said, will remain open to motorists and the public going to the venue, while VIP’s and officials with vehicles bearing the red sticker will access the ground via Elgon Terrace. They will park in the VIP parking corner, which is before the Heroes corner.

“Invited guests and those whose vehicles have the blue stickers and the public will access the grounds through Wampewo Avenue and park near the main entrance as directed by the traffic personnel,” Nsubuga said.

Wampewo Avenue, he added, will remain one-way in the morning from the roundabout to the former airstrip and one-way from the venue in the afternoon.
