Soldiers on robbery charge KAMPALA - Two UPDF soldiers were on Friday charged with robbery and remanded in Luzira Prison. Ambrose Ochieng and Lt. Jacob Odong of Mbuya Military Barracks and Pastor Mark Aduba Moro were charged with robbing and kidnapping city businessman Vekariya Dhanji. They allegedly robbed him of sh400,000 before kidnapping him from his home in Kololo, a city suburb. The Buganda Road Court heard that after kidnapping Dhanji, the suspects demanded an additional sh30m from him so as to set him free. This, the court said, took place on September 23, in the city centre. The prosecutor said the suspects threatened to shoot Dhanji. The hearing resumes in October.
Activists want NSSF reforms KAMPALA - Civil society organisations have urged the Government to reform the running of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) to guarantee security of the workers’ money. They accused the NSSF board of incompetence and unreliability and demanded that its members be sacked. Meeting in Kampala on Tuesday, 30 local NGOs said the NSSF’s major problem was political interference and called for the liberalisation of the sector. “NSSF is the only bull in the kraal. That is why it is embroiled in fraud,†said Arthur Larok, the National NGO Forum Executive Director. The fund is facing charges of buying land from Arma Ltd., a company linked to security minister Amama Mbabazi.
