THE Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has seized 263 bundles of prohibited polythene bags worth sh165m. The polythene bags, which are of 30 microns and below, were seized by the URA’s eastern region operatives recently at major entry points on Jinja road.

Peter Malinga, the URA commissioner for customs, said the operation that had been running since June has left 39 vehicles impounded. Of the 39 vehicles, 32 were carrying prohibited polythene bags.

“We have built capacity in enforcement to detect these polythene bags. Deterrent measures have been put in place to ensure that smuggling of prohibited items comes to an end,” Malinga said.
