WHAT happened at Mpanga SS on Saturday October 4, was the third catastrophe in less than a year. In November last year, an S.4 student of the school Alan Kisoro, disappeared and reappeared three months later, claiming he had been under the water — a phrase associated with being spellbound and going to consult with the evil underworld. At the end of September, a S.2, Charity Kobusinge, poisoned herself.
But, it was the last case which left a chill over Fort Portal town. Tadeo Bukye woke up in a jolly mood, ready to bid farewell to his fellow friends in S.6. He did not know it was his last day alive.
During the farewell dance for S.6 candidates, to which the rest of the school was invited, 17-year-old Tadeo Bukye, an S.4 student, was stabbed to death.
Bukye had been dancing with 14-year-old Aisha Komugisha, an S.1 student, when he collapsed on the dance floor in a pool of blood. He died moments later as he was being rushed to nearby Buhinga Referral Hospital.
Komugisha, who, moments before, had seen her cousin 15-year-old Shakila Kansiime in S.2 at the same school, stab Bukye, fled for her life, fearing she would be the second victim of Kansiime’s rage. Kansiime claimed she was Tadeo’s real lover and could not stand being ignored.
What followed Bukye’s death left the public dumbfounded. The students turned rowdy, lifted the bed where Bukye’s body lay from Buhinga Hospital and made a mournful demonstration in Fort Portal town. The Police, however, intercepted them and took the body to Virika Hospital mortuary. Postmortem results revealed that Bukye died of deep cuts in the neck, which affected his lungs.
As some tearfully traversed the streets in Fort Portal that Saturday evening, Kansiime was on the verge of being burnt by irate students. She was rescued by the Police, who descended on the school, shot in the air and dispersed the angry students.
Immediately after the Police had taken Bukye’s body away, the angry students went to Kansiime’s home in Bukwali village and smashed the windows of her grandmother’s house. The angry students even attempted to set the old woman’s house ablaze, but were stopped by gunshots from a local defense unit personnel. The students, who broke the main switch of the house, found that they could not burn it because there was no electricity.
Kansiime is still in Police custody. Komugisha is afraid of going back to school, fearing the rage of the students.
Elly Matte, the western region Police spokesman, says Kansiime will be charged with murder when the investigation is complete.
Bukye was buried on Monday, October 6 at his father’s ancestral home in Rwengoma village, amid tears and curses from relatives and friends. School authorities did not attend the ceremony.
During the burial, the Bukye’s sisters, Grace and Susan Kabonabaingi, described him as a disciplined, social, humourous, intelligent and hard working boy. Their grief was evident in their eulogy.
His stepmother, Phina Kabonabaingi, tearfully described him as a boy who always respected his elders. She said Bukye loved singing and he wanted to release a six-track album after his exams in November.
Bukye’s father, Paul Kabonabaingi, calmly said: “God will judge the family of the killer girl. I am patient. I will wait for the court’s final word. But I will not revenge.â€
Bukye was born on April 28, 1991, in Nakasongola, Luweero district to the late Shalifa Nyinemisa and Lt Rtd Paul Kabonabaingi.
He was the fifth born in a family of eight — four girls and four boys.
He went to Kahunga-Bunyonyi Primary School and later joined Kyebambe Model Primary School, where he sat his Primary Leaving Exams in 2003. He then joined Mpanga Secondary School for O’Level.
At the age of 16, he had released two tracks titled Abatooro tugenda nkaha (Abatooro, where are we heading?) and Okudigida.
