Who will stop this child torture?

EDITOR—I have observed with dismay the behaviour of some mothers on kampala streets which nobody seems to care about! Women place their children at strategic points to stretch out their hands begging in the hot sun for hours as they monitor from a distance.

Some of these children are less than two years old!
One of the punishments we used to be given in school was to stretch our hands out straight for over 20 minutes. It was such a painful experience that I can never forget.

I can’t imagine how painful it must be for these toddlers! These children even urinate where they are seated because they are ordered not to move.

Even when a coin is put in their hands they can’t tell its value, nor can they put it aside until their monitoring mother, brother, or sister comes to pick it from the rigidly stretched arms! I know that some of these mothers are destitutes trying to earn a living but it is our duty to save these children from their mothers if we must.

It is a shame that such things happen in the midst of NGOs purporting to be working for children’s rights, riding in monstrous cars past these tortured babies without hearing any advocacy initiative from them.
It is even more shameful when all the ethics and integrity minister, Nsaba Butuuro, cares about is miniskirts, homosexuality and prostitution!
