ALEX Cherop won Uganda her second medal, an athletics silver in the 1500m final at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India yesterday.

A strong final kick helped the Ugandan finish second after a photo finish. Cherop registered the same time of three minutes 48.41 seconds with South Africa’s Clof Jonas, who settled for bronze. Kenya’s Jonathan Ndiku won the race.

Uganda had a day earlier won her first medal, a weightlifting bronze, that came through Charles Sekyaaya.

In the other track race yesterday, Juliet Chekwel finished fourth in the women 1500m final.

Earlier, table tennis player Eddie Omongole was the only Ugandan player to advance from the group stage before falling to Australian Frank Robert in straight sets.

“It was my first tournament but qualifying for the main draw makes my future bright,” he said after the tournament.
