On Independence Day, pupils of Namate Primary School in Entebbe demonstrated how Uganda got independence on 9th October 1962, 46 years ago. During a ceremony at Entebbe Municipal Gardens, the children acted a play showing how the British, who had been ruling Uganda, handed over power to Ugandans.

Vicent Aita, who acted as Apollo Milton Obote, who was the Prime Minister at the time of independence, arrived and scouts rushed to open his car. Another car followed with Teopista Nabakiibi, acting as the Duke of Kent, who represented the Queen when Uganda got independence. After the door was opened for him, the ‘Duke’ waved to the crowd and moved towards the ‘Prime Minister’, who was standing near flag poles. The ‘Duke’ handed over the Uganda flag to the ‘Prime Minister’.

They both gave speeches as their parents, teachers and hundreds of other people present clapped. The British flag was brought down and the Uganda flag went up.
