DOREEN Mutibwa’s album launch at Hotel Equatoria Parking Yard last Friday showed that Ugandans are tired of album launches. Few fans, mostly her relatives, turned up for the show.
Jungle Productions Band waited for three hours for fans to gather; but when they realised there were no more fans entering, they walked onto the stage and started playing music for the few who were there.
The few singers available who included Charles Sekyewa, Karim Ssava aka Mabete and other little-known artistes, put up fantastic performances nonetheless and tried to salvage the show.
An hour later, Doreen Mutibwa, a popular singer among married women because of her family-related songs, appeared on the stage. She did not sing, but instead introduced her relatives who dominated the crowd. Sebuliba Mutumba, a member of Parliament for Kawempe South, was among her relatives.
After the introduction, Mutibwa auctioned a few CDs and sang her popular song, Abakazi Tulinga Sente ne Bwotusuula Mu Toyi batulonda, which loosely translates ‘women are like money even if you throw them into the toilet; men will look for them’.
Mutibwa sang five songs all together and the fans demanded to know who her husband was. She first refused to introduce him, but later bowed to pressure. That marked the end of the show.
