JULIANA Kanyomozi could be named East Africa’s best female artiste. Navio aka Danny Kigozi of Klear Kut could also make best male artiste at the 8th Kisima Awards on November 29 at the Windsor Golf and Country Club in Nairobi.
The two artistes, however, have to fend off competition from other countries. Juliana will have to beat Tanzanian songstress Lady Jaydee, Marion Shako, Nyota Ndogo and STL while Navio is up against Matonya, Mejja, Nameless and Onyi Papa J.
The Kisima Awards are Kenya’s equivalent of our Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) awards.
Juliana and Navio got three nods each in the nominations. Juliana features in the best collaboration category (East Africa) with Tanzanian crooner Bushoke for their song Usiende Mbali.
Kanyomozi and Bushoke are up against Tanzania’s Bongo Flava star, A.Y and Kenyan female star, Amani. Klear Kut also makes it in the group of the year (East Africa) category.
In the Ugandan categories, Kanyomozi is up for Song of the Year for Diana, a remake of the late Philly Bongoley Lutaaya song with the same name, alongside Michael Ross for Nkwetaaga, Navio for Bugumu, Dr. Propa for Nkubipinga and Goodlyfe featuring Omulangira Suuna for Nakudata.
Diana is also nominated in the Best Afro Beat single in this year’s PAM awards and is off the Philly Lutaaya Tribute Album which was nominated in the Album of the Year category.
Under the video of the year, Navio and the Goodlyfe Crew bounce back to compete with the same songs. Other contenders here are Kidfox ft. Bebe Cool for Bbusu (a mistake because the song the artistes sung together is Kapere) and Kigambo Araali with Akadara.
Voting is underway and ends on November 25. To vote for any artiste, text the word Kisima – followed by the Nominee Category Code for instance 36a to the short code within your region.
4142 for Kenya, 7197 for Uganda and 15550 for Tanzania. For information on artistes’ codes visit info@kisimaawards.co.ke.
