WITH technology advancing by leaps and bounds almost everyday, the market is witnessing a reduction in the size of computers and laptops. Now available on the Ugandan market is a laptop that is smaller than a year planner; it seamlessly fits into most women’s handbags. The HCL laptop is not only portable, it is the world’s cheapest laptop and has an elegant look.
Jitaditya Malik of Service and Computer Industries, (former NCR), says although it is small, the HCL, also known as a notebook, matches the power of desktops or bigger laptops.
The HCL, which runs on the Linux operating system has a seven-inch Liquid Crystal Display screen, weighs about one kilogramme, is equipped with an Intel processor and has a camera.
It also has multiple navigational features such as touch screen, thumboard, stylus, keyboard and touch buttons and is installed with the Windows Vista operating system.
Malik, the NCR sales and marketing manager, says the launching price is $500 (sh800,000), which he says is half the price of similar models. “These machines consume less power, provide Internet connectivity from anywhere and have a long battery life,†he says.
Besides their sophisticated features, the HCL laptops also have a sleek and lustrous body that makes them a class apart from other machines on the market.â€
With the Internet becoming more affordable, Malik reckons the laptops are ideal for business travelers. They are a hit at universities and NGO’s and with middleclass individuals.
