EDITOR—I was surprised when I read the article the Makerere University dean of students wrote on October 15. Makerere is quite cable of providing students meals. The only problem is that the administrators have not thought of a quick and lasting solution.
Instead they have resorted to complex but useless solutions. I will ask the same question that the late Dr Kibirige asked; How do you buy food in Africa?
Makerere can produce food on its own. all that needs to be done is lease land on which those staying near the university can till for pay.
In this way, there will be both jobs and food. Alternatively, Makerere can go to the villages and buy food from farmers instead of concentrating in the urban centres where food is very expensive. These are simple solutions that can make life easier. Jamil Sempebwa Makerere University
