OVER 3,000 residents from Isingiro south constituency have received food aid following a hailstorm that killed two people and destroyed most food crops.
The area MP, Alex Byarugaba, handed over the items to the beneficiaries on Thursday.
The items that included 200 bags of maize flour and 100 bags of beans, were from the Ministry of Relief and Disaster Preparedness.
The beneficiary parishes included Kanyamaizi, Rwamwijuka, Kamubezi, Kyabushenyi and Ruyanga.
Kikagate sub-county LC3 chairman Silver Mugurusi said children had stopped going to school because of hunger and their parents had also stopped working in their gardens to work for food in the neighbouring counties which were not affected by the storm.
Byarugaba appealed to residents to change their agricultural practices and adopt new farming methods that would protect their crops from being destroyed by running water.
He urged them to develop the culture of storing food that would help them in case of catastrophes.
He said the entire district depends on matooke and maize, which are easily destroyed by wind and rain and advised the residents to grow other crops like cassava, millet, sweet potatoes that cannot easily be affected.
He said trees are cut down daily but others are not planted to protect the environment and guard crops against strong winds and torrential rain.
