HE allegedly picked a gun from the armoury and when he abandoned it a few minutes later, two people were no more. Now, Geoffrey Magezi’s colleagues are hunting for him over a Tuesday evening murder in which Patience Nampurira and Dan Byamukama perished.

Nampurira was hitherto attached to the Police anti-terrorism unit, while Byamukama was recently retired from the army. He is said to have been a member of the Presidential Guard Brigade.

The harrowing incident, coming months after a similar one in the same place, occurred at Casements Zone in Naguru Police barracks in Kampala.

The Mobile Police Patrol Unit (MPPU) chief, Christopher Abache, said Magezi, 31, left Kireka for the unit offices at about 4:00pm. “He picked the gun from the armoury. Everyone believed he was going to report to his work station,” Abache said.

But instead of proceeding to the Electoral Commission, his work station, Magezi walked to Nampurira’s mud and wattle house. On seeing Nampurira and Byamukama, he reportedly opened gunfire, killing the duo instantly. Byamukama is said to have been a regular visitor of Nampurira’s.

Residents said Byamu-kama and Magezi had an argument, each claiming to be Nampurira’s lover. Magezi allegedly fled on a motorcycle. “He dropped the gun about 30 metres from the scene and fled,” Abache said.

“We are still trying to find out what could have prompted him to do this, because Magezi was a quiet man.” Magezi, Abache added, released a total of 10 bullets out of 30 that were in the gun.

In her early 20s, Nampurira, from Rukungiri in Western Uganda, was among a team that passed out recently at Kololo Airstrip in Kampala. She is said to have been among the best trainees.
