FORMER East African Community general secretary Amanya Mushega on Sunday night survived being beaten and robbed by armed thugs as he returned to his home.

The district criminal investigations officer, Bernard Babu, said the thugs staged a roadblock on the Bushenyi-Nyamiko road just half a kilometre from Mushega’s home in Keirere village, Kakanju sub-county at around 10:00pm.

He said Mushega, who was heading to his home stopped at the roadblock, but on realising that it was staged by thugs, his escort fired in the air, forcing the thugs to take off.

Babu said Mushega immediately alerted the Police.

Mushega, a former education and sports minister, said as his escorts were battling with the thugs, he sneaked out of his vehicle and took off into the bush from where he walked up to his residence.

“I am coming from a clinic where I had gone to nurse some injuries I sustained while running in the bush as I escaped from the thugs,” Mushega told a discussion meeting in Kyeizoba sub-county on Monday.

Babu said some people were earlier robbed at the same spot. They included Leonard Mugabe, who lost sh20,000 and Charles Kananura, who lost sh10,000.

Recently, a businessman in Ishaka town was attacked by armed thugs, but he overpowered them and grabbed their gun.

Babu urged the public to be more careful in the Christmas season.
