THE Democratic Party (DP) has crtiticised the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) for saying the Gulu district chairman, Norbert Mao, would not get votes from the north in the 2011 presidential elections.

The DP members said Mao’s candidature had caused excitement across the country and that those who had left the party were seeking to return.

Uma Kerobino, the DP regional coordinator, on Monday criticised Prof. Ogenga Latigo, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, over the remarks on Mao.

“The 20-year-long insurgency in Acholi sub-region, which later engulfed the entire north and parts of eastern Uganda, provided the region with the weird results in the 2006 elections, which FDC should not boast of. Now that the war is over, time is also up for sentiments determining results of elections. The 2011 elections will be about political wit and ideas,” Kerobino said.

Recent media reports stated that Latigo and Simon Oyet, the Nwoya MP, said Mao would not get votes from northern Uganda in the 2011 presidential elections.

Latigo is reported to have said the votes would go to the FDC, adding that Mao should go to Buganda, the stronghold of DP, for votes.

Kerobino also said FDC does not have tangible programmes for the country.

“The articles show the panic in other political camps, about this development, especially in FDC. As Ugandans already know, FDC does not have any tangible programme for this country except looking at deviations of NRM from its bush war agenda,” he said.

He added that DP had well-established structures and overwhelming support countrywide.
