IGG orders Kaliro to sack engineer

THE Inspectorate of Government (IGG) has ordered for the termination of Kaliro district engineer.

Gabriel Fataki allegedly holds two government jobs at the same time; earning two salaries, the IGG said.

In a 19-page report of October 28, 2008, to the Kaliro chief administrative officer, Anthony Martin Lukwago, the IGG said Fataki also doubles as clerk of works for MBW Consulting Engineers Limited.

MBW Consulting works for the Government; constructing a fish landing site at Kiyindi, Mukono district, under the agriculture and fisheries ministry.

Investigations revealed that Fataki was appointed on probation as superintendent of works for Kaliro district on October 10, 2007, and in March 2008, he was made acting district engineer.

“Fataki has indeed been an employee of MBW since July 2006, even before appointment into the Kaliro district local government.

In February 2008 while he was district Engineer Kaliro, Mr. Fataki signed another contract with MBW Consulting Engineers as a clerk for a fee of sh800,000 per month, to execute the project for the construction of a fish landing site at Kiyindi, Mukono district,” the report reads.

It adds that he was entitled to sh205,000 in monthly allowances. His contract with MBW which expires on February 1, 2009. It required him to participate in and attend all coordination meetings, provide weekly reports, oversee the construction, attend monthly meetings with the parties to the contract and many other duties, which need the services of a full time employee.

“Fataki’s conduct is contrary to the Uganda Public Service standing orders, which states that “No officer may accept any position which may interfere with his/her work as a public officer.

It says anyone who engages in any occupation which might conflict with the interests of the public service breaches the law.

The report directed chief administrative officer to submit Fataki to the district service commission for termination of his probationary appointment.
