THERE are occasions when utmost commitment, determination and quality deserve every bit of success and KCC FC’s sensational and landmark 2-1 win over Express FC was no exception.
KCC boss George Nsimbe had asked his side prior to the city derby to show their true quality in bringing an end to a damning static that seen them falter at the hands of the Red Eagles since 2002, when they had last beaten the Wankukuluku outfit in a league fixture.
And in an exhilarating match, hailed by both coaches Nsimbe, David Otti and fans as one of the best they had seen in recent meetings, the league champions responded in the best way possible –with Robert Ssentongo and Anthony Bongole the architects of both goals that could have as much influence on KCC’s season.
Such was KCC’s sense of retribution that not even Daniel Sserunkuuma’s eighth minute opening strike for Express could derail their aspirations.
Sserunkuuma and Francis Jjemba are such talents never mind their diminutive nature and could have preserved Express’ run over KCC to 11 unbeaten games, on not less than one occasion but for a lack of confidence in the face of an out-of-sorts KCC back-four.
The league champions them selves had a decent share of chances particularly through flamboyant midfielder Vincent Kayizzi and pint-sized striker Robert Ssentongo.
Ssentongo however followed up a series of misses with a beauty deep into the second half before substitute Anthony Bongole capitalized on Sentongo’s blocked effort, to thump home the winner and send KCC faithful wild.
The celebrations gathered momentum after news filtered through that table leaders army side Simba had collapsed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bunamwaya.
Habib Kavuma helped Bunamwaya to an early lead before Isaac Isinde’s own goal guaranteed Jackson Mayanja’s side a 2-0 win over Sam Ssimbwa’s Simba at the dreaded Bombo grounds.
“It is a very sweet win. Simba are table leaders and squeezing them at their home ground is very sweet. People should be able to respect Bunamwaya,†an upbeat Mayanja said after the match. Nalubaale held URA FC to a 1-1 draw.
