PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has mourned the late Bishop Emeritus of Kampala Diocese, Lucas Gonahasa, saying his death was a great loss to the church and the country.

“Besides rendering spiritual enrichment to the church, he promoted national peace and unity. He will be remembered for his great contribution towards the education sector,” Museveni said in a speech read by the Minister for General Duties, Adolf Mwesigye.

The President contributed sh5m to the bereaved family. Gonahasa, 78, died of diabetes and hypertension at Mbale Regional Hospital on Wednesday after going into a comma.

He was laid to rest at his home in Kabweri parish, Kadama sub-county in Pallisa district on Saturday.

Gonahasa is survived by a widow, Loy and seven children. The retired Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo, said the late Gonahasa was a social man who loved cracking jokes.

“He used to say that elders do not lie. Wherever Gonahasa was, the people were always happy,” Nkoyooyo said.

In a speech read by the Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, Dr. Nicodemus Okille, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Henry Luke Orombi, hailed Gonahasa, saying he was a hard working shepherd who loved the church.

“He has been a jovial and courageous man in his service to God. We appreciate the role God used him to accomplish while still on earth,” Orombi said.

He added: “Gonahasa diligently served the Lord and his country and has left behind a legacy that both the young and old people of his age must emulate.”

Gonahasa was ordained priest in 1958 after training in Buwalasi Theological College in Mbale district and was consecrated bishop in 1977.
