A FOOD vendor in Nakasongola district has sued the Ssaabaruuli, Isabarongo Mwogezi Butamanya, over a sh150,000 food debt, which he allegedly incurred in 2002.

In the case filed at the district chief magistrate’s court on November 20, the plaintiff Margaret Nakatudde was seeking recovery of the principal, interest on the principal costs, plus any other costs that court would deem fit.

The Ssaabaruuli is the cultural leader of the Baruuli from Nakasongola, a contested area, which Mengo claims to be part of the Buganda.

Mwogezi’s prime minister Gawera Sebwato on Wednesday said the Ssaabaruuli had opted to settle the matter out of court.

“Last week we called the woman so that we can pay her but she apparently wants to solve the matter in court,” Sebwato told The New Vision.

The plaintiff alleged that between October and December, the Saabaruuli and his visitors used to take meals and drinks from the plaintiff’s eating place, Kezimbira Restaurant, which is located in Nakasongola town.

She said the Ssaabaruuli used to sign in a book whenever he and his visitors ate at the restaurant.

Nakatudde further alleges that despite several reminders, the defendant had failed to effect payment.

According to the plaint, the Ssaabaruuli was dully served with a notice of intention to sue, but he ignored it.

Attached to the plaint are two handwritten documents, dated May 10 and October 25, in which the Ssaabaruuli apologised for the delay in effecting payment and promised to pay soon.

Also attached to the file, is a demand letter dated November 4, which the plaintiff served the Ssaabaruuli.

According to the case file, Mwogezi was given 14 days from November 20, within which to file his defence.
