THE Jinja mayor, Mohammed Baswale Kezaala and the chairperson of the Jinja central division, Mubarak Kirunda, have attacked the district land board for selling 12 acres of municipality land.

The duo said the land located on Plot 1-9 at Bridge Street was sold to Black Eagle Investments without their consent.

“Black Eagle Investments paid sh80m for the piece of land and it was received by one of the accounts assistant who did not know what was going on,” Baswale said at joint press conference at the Mayor’s Parlour on Monday.

Baswale revealed that a special council meeting between Jinja Municipal Council (JMC) and the division was being planned to recover the land.

The mayor said they have a copy of the payment advice form dated August 21, 2008.

“Whoever has eaten this money should be ready to cough it back,” Baswale said.

On September 1, the permanent secretary in the local government ministry, Vincent Ssekono, wrote to town clerks, district chairpersons and mayors of municipalities ordering them to stop encroaching and illegally converting public open spaces to other uses.
