UGANDA’S leading junior tennis player Duncan Mugabe stormed the semi-finals of the ITF/East Africa U-18 championships yesterday after a dominant 6-1 6-4 win over seed six Gilbert Kibet from Kenya.

The 18 year old top seed used an aggressive approach, powering down shots with a big serve and a good back hand, to beat his Kenyan opponent at Lugogo’s centre court.

Mugabe’s aggressive serve was too much for Kibet to handle, and he caved in after initially trying to do battle.

“I planned to start aggressively so that I could over power him,” a confident Mugabe said after the win. “I learnt from my past and I don’t want to take any chances this time. I am feeling good with my game and am looking forward to reaching the final.”

Mugabe will take on seed four from Egypt Shady Khalaf, in today’s semi-final.

Nigeria’s Samuel Omoile, winner of the Burundi leg was ejected in the quarter-final by Zimbabwe’s Admire Mushonga 6-1 6-3.

The tournament ends tomorrow and moves on to Nairobi for the final leg.
