Dear Doctor,
What is Balanitis? Is it curable?
Charles

Dear Charles,
BALANITIS is inflammation of the head of the penis. Symptoms include itching, discharge, wounds and soreness. It is common among uncircumcised men.
Balanitis is associated with poor hygiene and the foreskin may be unable to roll back.

Balanitis is caused by candida, other fungal infections, skin diseases, irritation from chemicals, syphilis and diabetes.
Balanitis is treatable. Depending on the cause, a cream or other medicine is given by a doctor to control the infection.

If there is an underlying problem like diabetes, it needs to be controlled. Circumcision may be recommended at times.

Clean the head of the penis while bathing at least once a day. Roll back the foreskin and wash under it.
