KENYAN Dismas Ndiza seized a commanding seven-stroke lead in the MTN Mug of Mugs tournament as local hero Deo Akope faltered in the third round at Uganda Golf Club Kitante yesterday.

Ndiza, who set a new course record of eight under par-64 in the second round, fired 70 yesterday to open up a comfortable lead as Akope shot a woeful 77, putting his prospects for the sh1.6m top cash prize in great doubt.

Akope, with an aggregate score of 214, admitted he was virtually out of contention for the top slot.

“My game was terrible. It’s almost impossible to catch up with Ndiza with just one round left. I missed the greens so many times with my second shot. My chipping failed completely,” Akope lamented.

Rwandan Emmanuel Ruterana is hot on Akope’s heels, just three shots adrift while Godfrey Mande and Dickson Lagoro share fourth spot on 223, a staggering 16 strokes off the pace.

Kenyan David Odhiambo had the second best score of the day (70) to move into the top 10 on 224.

Odhiambo shares eighth position with his compatriot Simon Ngigi and Ugandan George Olayo.

Amos Kamya and Brian Toolit are also still in the money bracket of the sh10m tournament.

The championship also doubles as the MTN Quarterly Mug in which sh3m will be won by Ugandan competitors.

The professionals’ tournament ends this afternoon to pave way for the amateur version of Mug of Mugs that also tees off tomorrow at the Kitante course.
