THE Diamond Trust Bank on Wednesday opened a branch in Jinja.

Jinja mayor Mohammad Baswale Kezaala launched the branch. He said people should use the opportunity to start saving with a licensed banking institution.

“Banking institutions are coming. Recently, we opened up the United Bank of Africa and now we are here witnessing the opening of this bank,” Baswale said.

He said the bank had opened at a time when people in the area had lost sh10b to fake money lending institutions.

Baswale said the district had a dynamic business community and advised the bank board of directors to support investors and give loans to small local investors to generate capacity and social development.

He advised the residents to support economic development and learn how to save and invest.

The bank’s chief executive officer Varghese Thambi, described Jinja town as a viable location with great business potential and demand for reliable and affordable financial services.

“Opening the bank is in line with our expansion strategy in Uganda,” he said.

Varghese said their customers would be able to access a wide range of banking services that include; savings and current accounts with ATM facilities, term deposits, Western Union money transfer services, payment of water bills, URA tax remittance and international remittances.

He added that they would soon launch the new Visa debt card and the Visa credit card.

This is first branch in Busoga region. It is located on Plot 32/34 Main Street.

Eggen Interiors Ltd, a Jinja based construction firm, did the construction work.

The bank’s deputy chairman Mohamood Thobani attended the launch.
