Xmas: No one thinks of saving

Dec 12, 2008

The festive season is around the corner but the food and fuel prices are biting hard. Saturday Vision’s Godwin Ayesiga asked people what they would go for if they got a sh500,000 Christmas bonus

Robert Kashaija, Youth MP Western region
That is very little money. Politicians spend a lot of money. Like you know, it’s the season I will be spending time in the village and many people in my constituency will come to talk to me. So I would buy food and drinks for them.

David Katumwa, Businessman
I would spend it on airtime and would use the balance to take my family to the beach.

Emmanuel Mugisha, Mechanic at City Centre Caltex
Christmas is my birthday. I would buy special gifts for my parents, spend some on cake and then buy drinks for my friends.

Pastor Alex Bilton, Wonderworking Church, Naalya
I would not spend that money on myself. Since there are many of God’s people who need help like street children and bed-ridden people in the hospitals, I would donate it to them.

Juma Ssekandi, Taxi Driver at Masaka Stage
I would buy as many different women (prostitutes) as possible. Then, I would use the balance on fueling my rally car.

Edison Natukunda,
teacher at Buganda Road Primary School.
Don’t be sarcastic. How can I spend more than what I earn? Well, I would buy a suits for my wife and myself and dresses for my daughter and my mother. I would also buy matooke, rice, posho, meat, chicken, greens, a crate of soda and of course some Mulamba (local brew).

John Baptist Oringi,
guard with Saracen
Not much that I could do with that money. Besides, I always survive with whatever little I have during the Christmas season.

Charles Okello, second year student of Development Studies at Makerere University
I would spend that by going for pilsner bottle lifting at Hotel Africana and catch up with a friend at club. I would also buy casual shirts, trousers and shoes.

Edward Gabura, Banker at Tropical Bank Ltd
Come on Godwin. That is not enough for Christmas. I would definitely spend that money on wine and probably buy fuel for my car.
