CISM honours President Museveni

WORLD military sports governing body, CISM, has honoured President Yoweri Museveni with an award of Grand Cordon for his role in supporting sports develop¬ment in Africa.

WORLD military sports governing body, CISM, has honoured President Yoweri Museveni with an award of Grand Cordon for his role in supporting sports develop¬ment in Africa.

The Grand Cordon, which is the highest award from CISM, was bestowed to the president by the Organization for Military Sport in Africa (OSMA) president Col. Hammad Kalkaba during a state dinner for participants of the Africa Military Cup at Speke Resort Munyonyo Saturday.

Cameroon, who beat Algeria 4-3 on penalties, received the top cash prize of 10000 euros (sh25m) offered by Burkina Faso president Blaise Compaore. Runners up Algeria pocket¬ed 5000 euros while third-placed Kenya bagged 3000.

Uganda who finished fourth, like the rest of the the other seven teams got 1000 euros (about sh2.5m). At the same dinner, President Museveni who enumerated good values of sports, pledged to make a ‘decent’ contribution towards the tournament.

Stressing the importance of sports virtue of promot¬ing understanding, the President urged all partici¬pants to be Pan-African instead of regarding them¬selves as Anglophone or Francophone.

“You are here as African teams. You should talk about Afriphone not French or English,” urged Museveni who pledged to lobby the African Union to support the event. Besides the President, seven other Ugandans including former interna¬tional soccer stars Polly Ouma and Paul Ssali received medals.

Ouma and Ssali featured for army side Simba in the Africa Championship in 1978. Other Ugandans decorated were defence minister Crispus Kiyonga (Grand Officer), Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Aronda Nyakairima (Officer), First Chief of CISM delegation Maj. Gen. Frederick Othieno (Officer Knight) and Chief of CISM delegation Col. Willis Byarugaba (Knight).
