THE prices of sunflower have soared to sh550 per kilogramme, up from sh450 last year. With stiff competition between the Mukwano Group of Companies and the small scale local millers, farmers seem set for a Merry Christmas.
Michael Edule of Agro-Based Enterprises Ltd, was, however, disappointed that the high prices had made farmers greedy.
“Most farmers are not taking the quality of the product importantly as they sell wet seeds so as to weigh more.
“They are also selling unclean seeds in order to fetch more money. “We are drying the seeds first before milling them for oil. The practice forces buyers to reduce the price of the crop,†he explained.
Edule said he was selling the processed sunflower for sh2,800 a litre. He distributes it to Apac and Balla townships.
Adule disclosed that he also sells sunflower cakes to Kampala at sh180 a kilo to clients who use it for making animal feeds .
