Ingo Schluter Marine Consultants has won the bid to provide consultancy services for the repair of MV Pamba.

According to a notice from the Procurement and Disposal Unit of the Privatisation Unit dated December 12, the firm will provide the service at 110,100 euros (about 297.2m)
Taxes estimated at 19,29.41 euros (about sh52.4m), would be paid by the Government, the notice added.

MV Pamba is Uganda’s only remaining vessel on the Central Corridor route on Lake Victoria linking Uganda’s Port Bell to Mwanza in Tanzania and Kisumu in Kenya.

The vessel operated by Rift Valley Railways to connect its western Kenya railway route to Port Bell, is, However, currently out of service, leaving only Tanzania’s Umoja to provide ferry transport on the lake.

Uganda’s water transport has been dogged by a series of disasters, which climaxed with the sinking of MV Kabalega in Lake Victoria in May 2005.

The ship reportedly sank partly due to the vessel’s lack of due maintenance and human error, which led to its collision with MV Kaawa.

According to Ingo Schluter Marine Consultants’ website http://isship.de, the firm has been providing consultancy and engineering services in maritime business for shipping companies, shipyards, governmental authorities, banks, courts, individuals and organisations for almost 40 years.

“Our team of naval architects and marine engineers carries out consulting services in all parts of the world,” it said.

Originally, Uganda had three wagon ferries operating on Lake Victoria, while Tanzania and Kenya had one ferry each.

The Government has since the post-election violence in Kenya last year reconsidered having an alternative route to the coast through Port Bell-Mwanza and on to Dar es Salaam.
