1. Maintain your current weight, be realistic don’t try to lose kilograms during the holiday.

If you are currently overweight and want to lose weight, this is not the time to do it.

Don’t set yourself up for failure by making unrealistic goals for yourself.

2. Plan on Not dieting after the holiday; Anticipation of food restriction sets you up for binge-type eating over the holidays (“after all, if I’m never going let myself eat this again after Jan. 1st”)

3. Plan time for exercise. Exercise helps relieve holiday stress and prevent weight gain. It will offset the increased holiday eating, relieve stress, regulate appetite, and burn up extra calories.

Try out walking, swimming, jogging or riding a bicycle for 15-30 minutes of moderate exercise.

4. No skipping meals; eat a light snack like fruit salad to curb your appetite before going for a party. An empty stomach may disorganise your resolve to eat less.

5. Be ‘Buffet’ selective; survey party buffets before filling your plate. Pack your plate with vegetables and fruits and skip the fatty options

6. Know your stomach; eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed.

7. Beware of beverages; coffee, wines, liquors and alcohol. They contain empty calories, which induce overeating and lessen inhibitions.

Non alcoholic drinks are also full of sugars and calories, so watch what you take. Juice or water is a better choice.

8. Balance your eating; a heavy lunch would go well with a light dinner, it takes 500 calories per day (or 3,500 calories per week) above your normal/maintenance consumption to gain half a kilo.

9. Focus off food. Do something else apart from cooking and shopping food, e.g. visit a park, play with the children, take a walk.

10. Reduce the fat in your meals by choosing optimal preparation methods. For instance grill chicken instead of frying it, steam the fish, make a steamed pudding. Try out low fat and low energy foods, include salads on the menu.
