CORRUPTION in the contracts committees is the cause of increasing substandard work in the districts, a local council official has said.

Musisi Kibugujju, the LC3 chairman of Walukuba division in Jinja municipality, said: “Members of the contracts committees often leave out competent companies and opt for those owned by friends and relatives.”

An angry Kibugujju was on Tuesday reacting to the discovery that a water drainage channel constructed in the division was substandard.

The one-kilometre channel, on Kate Road, was constructed by Thita Engineering Company. It was supposed to be done by stone pitching at sh29m.

“It is unfortunate that the channel has already developed cracks. Some parts have given way even before the commissioning,” Kibugujju lamented.
He said after realising the shoddy work, the council decided to terminate the contract.

The company, Kibugujju said, had been blacklisted and the balance due would not be paid.

He said the politicians had done their best to ensure quality work, but were let down by the technical supervisors.

Kibugujju commissioned a three-classroom block at Walukuba West Primary School whose asbestos roof was replaced with iron sheets at sh9m.

Other projects launched include the fencing of Walukuba Community Centre at sh7m and the grading and tarmacking of the Kyabazinga Lane at sh14m.

Kibugujju warned the leaders to take care while selecting contractors or risk footing the bills for correcting substandard work.
