THE UPDF 4th Division commander, Brig Charles Otema Awany, has denied allegations that he sent a threatening text message to Joseph Kony that made him not to sign the final peace agreement.

Otema said the allegation was a creation of MPs Jimmy Akena and Livingstone Okello-Okello.

The two MPs recently visited Kony in Garamba forest together with other local leaders from Acholi, Lango, Teso and Adjumani.

“These opposition politicians are mad; they just oppose things for the sake of it,” Otema said.

“Do I know the satellite phone number of Kony? How do I frustrate the peace talks when I could be a beneficiary?” Otema asked.

He said the opposition wanted to discredit the Government.

Otema added that those close to Kony sent him the text messages.

Last Wednesday Akena told the press that Otema sent text messages which scared Kony from signing the agreement.

“Kony himself said he received messages from some army officers threatening to kill him once he signed the deal,” Akena alleged.

Other messages, Akena said, were from a former woman MP from the north, a prominent Acholi living in the UK, and a humanitarian worker based in Pader.

Akena said one message listed the victims of Kony and read: ‘When you sign we will be ready to deal with you’.

Commenting on the current offensive against Kony, Akena said: “This should stop. We agree that he has rebels, but these are child soldiers who were recruited forcefully.”

“Most of these boys and girls have families they expect to meet.” he added.
